Educational Resources clarify the reality of the present
housing situation through detailed research and accessible presentation.
Understanding is central for effective action. Resources will
be prepared in formats appropriate for congregational use, including
worship bulletin inserts, flyers, and adult education materials
within individual congregations.
Advocacy Opportunities
will be explained and disseminated to participating individuals
and congregations to assist them in becoming confident and well-informed
advocates for housing issues.
Transitional
Housing Partnerships give congregations the opportunity
to form relationships and provide housing for homeless and low-income
families for a two-year period, as the family moves toward self-sufficiency.
HomeSharing
is another concrete way that people of faith can help to meet
local demands for affordable housing. “Empty-nesters”
or families/individuals with extra space in their homes are matched
with people who are seeking a room in their community. The arrangement
is beneficial to both parties, and is a way, one person at a time,
that the affordable housing crisis is resolved.
Volunteer
Opportunities are available both in connection with
Interfaith Open Communities and with other organizations working
for the cause local to each community.
Often it has been through such opportunities that participants
experience a “face on the facts,” an experience of
the reported injustice and a new heart for working for the peace
that comes only with justice.
